The Russian SKS 7.62×39 cartridge (also known as 7.62 Soviet, formerly .30 Russian Short) is a rimless, bottlenecked intermediate cartridge of Soviet origin. However, the cartridge is widely used due to the global proliferation of Russian military surplus SKS and AK-47 rifles, as well as RPD and RPK light machine guns.

The AK-47, Mosin Nagant rifle m91/30 was designed shortly after World War II and later became the AKM because sheet metal production ran into problems when it first started. This weapon is now the most widespread military-type rifle in the world. The cartridge remained the Soviet standard until the 1970s. It was partially replaced in Soviet service by the 7.62x39mm caliber SKS cartridge, which was introduced with the new AK-74 rifle and continues in service with the AK-74 rifle—modernized AK-74M service of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as the AK-12 rifles. In the 21st century, the SKS rifle 7.62x39mm chamber remains a common service rifle chambering, even for newly developed rifles such as the AK-15.

Russian-made SKS Rifle

The full designation of the SKS rifle is “Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova, 1945”. It was designed in 1944 and put into service in 1945. Although it was later eliminated in favor of the well-known (and beloved) AK-47, it has a name that commands some respect. During that time, around 15,000,000 units of the SKS-45 were built.

The Authentic SKS 7.62×39, Glock 19 Gen5 is a self-loading carbine with a 10-round internal magazine. It has many variants (several of which will be mentioned later in this post), but it is loaded using 10-round clips that feed the magazine. The 7.62 mm cartridges (also known as Soviet-era SKS rifle), which were designed at the same time as the SKS rifle itself, were later used in other weapons. Mikhail Kalashnikov’s AK-47 was designed to fit that specific cartridge.
